Constantia Display was commissioned around 2018 as a large-size companion for our distinctive Constantia typeface, which was optimised for reading both on screen and in print. The display ‘cut’ was created for use in Microsoft PowerPoint templates, where display-size type commonly sits alongside smaller text.
Constantia Display’s design is lighter, narrower, and has a smaller x‑height than the text family. Importantly, it is a genuine display cut rather than a direct optical size adjustment, featuring novel details that differentiate the two types while maintaining their overall harmony.
The most notable design difference is in the crossbars of the uppercase E and F (and similar features in the Cyrillic) where John Hudson took inspiration from Hermann Zapf’s approach to metal type: varying the design for larger sizes rather than simply scaling the text version. The result is a typeface that reads with more refinement at headline sizes while remaining unmistakably related to its text companion.
