Sitka was designed for Microsoft’s Advanced Reading Technology group by Matthew Carter. The design of Sitka is the product of interactive revision in response to legibility testing conducted by Keven Larson. While the test results needed to be applied judiciously to maintain overall consistency and harmony in the typeface, the project demonstrated that design and research can be successfully integrated in development.

Tiro Typeworks undertook the technical implementation of the Sitka type, initially as a family of 36 static fonts, and later as OpenType variable fonts with wght and opsz axes. The robust Small size design remains legible at 6pt, while the elegant Banner style can be used up to poster sizes. The intermediate size designs were tuned to specific target ranges during testing undertaken by Matthew Carter and Ross MIlls at Microsoft.
